Energy poverty is a global issue but everywhere around the world especially in Africa, energy is a woman’s issue. And because it’s for household use, women and children bear the brunt of energy poverty. At OneLamp we believe kerosene use in the 21st century is unacceptable and needs to be addressed urgently!
The burning of kerosene lamps leads to the death of 1.5 million people every year. Inhaling kerosene smoke is the equivalent of smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day, and commonly induces respiratory illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia in tens of millions of people. Kerosene lamps contribute to a vicious cycle of poverty that needs to be broken. The adoption and the usage of solar home systems translates to a reduction of greenhouse gases that cause climate change and its impact on the livelihood of communities. Climate change impacts have the potential to undermine and even, undo progress made towards improving the socio-economic well-being of African communities. Since we started operations we have impacted over 250,000 people in Uganda by providing access to affordable clean, safe lighting.
Our solar power systems have enabled off-grid households & SMEs to save $30million that could have been used to buy kerosene fuel for lighting
We have created an additional 120million study hours for school-going children living in off-grid homes.
Since 2014 our solar systems have eliminated harmful exposure to 50million kgs of CO2 emissions.
OneLamp provides off-grid Small, and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and households access to productive solar energy solutions through an affordable, mobile-enabled, prepaid lease-to-own model. The model removes the upfront price barrier of large solar systems by enabling customers to pre-pay for energy over time in secure, affordable amounts using mobile money. All products have a guaranteed warranty of 3 years and are purchased under a lease to own scheme with weekly/monthly mobile money incremental payments for up to 24months without interest.
